Project Description

The dwelling at Koowong Avenue involves extensive alterations and additions to an existing single dwelling which did not take advantage of its unique site location. The main objectives were to dramatically improve the dwellings presence to the street, and significantly increase the amenities strong connection to the back and views of Middle Harbour.

Branch Dwelling is composed of two separate forms which overlap to establish the entry. A heavy flat concrete roof extends from the double garage and cantilevers over the entry structure. While the secondary structure is defined as an open plan living space with a higher pitched skillion roof. The raked ceiling creates a highlight window above an articulate copper box light shelf with a horizontal linear window below, forming the kitchen splashback. The composition of this facade has been carefully considered to allow northern sunlight in winter for warmth, and controlled sunlight in summer, moderating temperatures and providing visual privacy from Koowong Avenue to the kitchen and living spaces.

The main living space is set behind the kitchen and laundry, integrated with a new large cantilever balcony that floats above the park encapsulating extensive views to Middle Harbour.

Large aluminium doors slide back in front of the external  brickwork, and raised external pavers on ‘Buzon Pads’, allow for a detailed transition between inside and out.

A large undercroft space below the existing structure has been adapted to increase a secondary living/ cinema room connecting to a forth bedroom and study. This opens to a raised deck and plunge pool with a wet-edge that provides a solid perimeter with privacy to the park. A cellar has also been created off the study.
